Windows 11: Is my PC compatible?

Windows 11: Is my PC compatible?
cover

Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 11, will be available at the end of the year, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to install it on your PC. And if not, it may be interesting to know the reason.

Microsoft has officially presented its new operating system and the batch of new features it comes with. We also learned that the system would be free for Windows 10 users who want to upgrade to Windows 11.

Microsoft has now dampened the hopes of the 1.3 billion Windows 10 users, by revealing the system requirements for Windows 11.

On paper, however, it does not seem extraordinary at first glance:

  • Processor: 1 GHz with 2 cores on a 64-bit compatible processor or faster or Soc
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Hard Drive Space: 64 GB
  • Display: 9-inch minimum with 720p resolution
  • Graphics Card: DirectX 12 compatible with WDDM 2.x driver
  • Bios: UEFI with secure boot
  • Connection: required for Windows 11 Home wheeling

But it’s when the list of compatible processors is displayed that things get tougher. Only the most recent processors are supported, leaving out computers that are powerful and capable of running a system like Windows 11, which Microsoft claims to have lightened and optimized.

An official verification tool, but limited

PC Health Check (Windows 11 compatibility tool)

With the announcement of the upcoming Windows 11 release, Microsoft has also unveiled a new tool to check your computer’s compatibility with the new operating system: PC Health Check (Windows 11 compatibility tool).

In its first version the software simply displayed whether the PC was compatible or not. Following numerous criticisms, some updates have been made and it can sometimes give some indications, sometimes simply inform of the non-compatibility, without giving the reason.

An alternative software a little more talkative

If the first software allows to know the state of compatibility, it is necessary to turn to an alternative software to know a little more. Of unknown author, “WhyNotWin11” (for no Windows 11) was recovered by developers on Github. This time it lists the characteristics of the computer and allows you to know what are the blocking points that would prevent using Windows 11 on the machine.

Warning: your browser and Windows may display a security warning because the software is not signed, in this case you must manually unlock the recovery and execution of the software.

WhyNotWin11

WhyNotWin11 is a small utility that will allow you to test your system to see if it is compatible with the brand new operating system from Microsoft, Windows 11.

In a few seconds, the list of required elements is displayed with a color code to show what the problem is.

Since Windows 11 is not yet officially available, this list of prerequisites could still evolve if Microsoft decides to relax the eligibility requirements a bit.
